What is User-Centered Design?

User-Centered Design also known as (UCD) is a design process of a tool that is revolved around the user's specific needs. This tool could be a website, an app, a game etc. To meet those needs, evaluation is done by brainstorming and gaining an understanding of how it'll look and work but also equally important as how easy it will be for the user to use and interact with this given tool. Speaking on topic of interaction and usability, making the tool look spectacular is one thing but making it function completely is another.

There are four types of User Interfaces (UI):
  • Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) - Typically these interfaces include elements such as windows, menus, buttons, scrolling bars. All things that can be noticed by eye sight.
  • Voice User Interfaces (VUIs) - This interface uses voice to interact with a particular tool, for example when you are calling your Internet Provider and you reach an automated caller, and voice recognition is used.
  • Augmented Reality User Interface (AR) - Not to be mistaken for Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented reality is where the environment around you stays the same, but information or animation overlays on top.
  • Touch User Interfaces (TUI) - The interaction through touch, very commonly used in today's world with many touchscreen compatible devices. For example: A laptop computer, instead of using the trackpad or peripheral devices to navigate or type, TUI enables the user to touch the screen to do the same functions.
