Kerning & Leading

Kerning:

This refers to the amount of space between two letters, other characters, numbers or punctuation. The use of kerning is to avoid awkward looking gaps close or far and re-adjust them to improve quality, professionalism and to make your content look great and consistent.

Kerning is not just for aesthetic purposes, without the use of kerning in design your message or content could be presented and read wrongly. If you do not space your letters out correctly providing sufficient space between them, you can end up with a completely different word than you originally intended to use. Not only is it very unattractive and non-professional like, it also leads to the publication of a incorrect message as now your text is seen and read entirely different. This is why kerning is so important to include and make sure is correct in your design, it can put a bad image on your reputation and looks very careless.

This image doesn't represent an example of a incorrect message but just an incorrect spacing of letters making it very mumbo jumbo and funny looking.

Leading:

Although leading and kerning aren't identical they do share a common similarity, and that is space. Leading refers to the amount of space between lines of text. Frequently also known as "line spacing" or "interline spacing".

Leading is also very important in design, when a reader is reading your content and your lines are so tightly packed together that people will either just stop reading, struggle to read or even comprehend the information. All of those things can add up to your information being confusing to look at or even unreadable because they can't make sense of the words (extreme case of leading). Grabbing peoples attention in design is everything, if your content is too long and confusing  then people just won't read it. Subsequently in advertising, this can lead to a lack of trade and the expansion of your business.
