Microphones

Handheld: This type of microphone is seen and used when a singer or rapper is performing, or on a news report out on scene. They are designed for rough use and are very durable. Best audio is captured when mic is close to the action or subject.
Lavalier: This is also known as the lapel mic, it is most commonly attached to shirts, jackets or clothing. This mic is used a lot for talk shows or interviews. It allows for a much more informal and relaxed approach to capturing audio in a non-direct nature. (when exposed to outside environments, you may need a windscreen to cancel out interference.)
Shotgun: Most commonly used on set in movies, audio can be captured in a small area, yet be out of sight on the camera. The mic isn't attached or held by the talent, it is held by a crew member or audio assistant. Best audio is captured from above, and also below.
Boundary (or table) mic: Boundary microphones could be used very effectively in situations like an office meeting, the mic lays flat on the table central to all subjects and can be confident that everything you need will be picked up. Mics like this, typically provide more of an open and slightly distant sound as compared to other mics.
